Problem

This technote explains how to resolve an error: 'The Eclipse executable launcher was unable to locate its companion launcher jar' that can occur when launching IBM Rational Team Concert.

Symptom

The following error can occur when Rational Team Concert and Rational Application Developer or Rational Software Architect, have been installed together ('shell-sharing') in the same IBM Installation Manager Package Group, and Rational Application Developer is subsequently uninstalled.
Unable to start Rational Team Concert client. The startup fails with an error dialog that displays the text: 'The Eclipse executable launcher was unable to locate its companion launcher jar

Cause

When the IBM Installation Manager version 1.2 uninstalls an Eclipse 3.4 based offering (such as Rational Application Developer or Rational Software Architect 7.5) that is shell-sharing with an Eclipse 3.3 based offering (Rational Team Concert 1.0.1) the Installation Manager leaves behind settings in the eclipse.ini file that are specific to Eclipse 3.4.

Environment

Installing Rational Team Concert 1.0.1 and Rational Application Developer 7.5 with the IBM Installation Manager into the same Package Group.

Diagnosing The Problem

The error dialog described above is shown when attempting to start the Rational Team Concert client and the Rational Team Concert client does not start.

Resolving The Problem

To resolve this issue perform the following steps:

  1. Go to the installation location (for example, C:Program FilesIBMTeamConcert)
  2. Copy the eclipse.ini file to a backup file (such as eclipse.ini.bak).
  3. Edit the eclipse.ini file and remove these two lines:

    -startup
    pluginsorg.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.0.100.v20080509-1800.jar
  4. Start the Rational Team Concert client again.
