New code, ASME B31.9, Building Services Piping, evolved and was published in 1982. This code joined other well-known ASME B31 Code for Pressure Piping sections such as B31.1, Power Piping and B31.3, Process Piping. B31.9 has been revised and updated several times since then, most recently in 2008. WHAT 1S COVERED UNDER B31.9? Code Books Required for Use with ASME Product Certification Marks Note: For books other than the Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (e.g., B31.1, PTC 25, NQA-1), the required edition as of July 1, 2013 is listed. The specific effective Addenda will be referenced in the applicable Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code section.
Power Piping
Prescribes minimum requirements for the design, materials, fabrication, erection, test, inspection, operation, and maintenance of piping systems typically found in electric power generating stations, industrial institutional plants, geothermal heating systems, and central and district heating and cooling systems. The code also covers boiler external piping for power boilers and high temperature, high pressure water boilers in which steam or vapor is generated at a pressure of more than 15 psig; and high temperature water is generated at pressures exceeding 160 psig and/or temperatures exceeding 250 degrees F.
